Author of a Controversial New Book Says the AMA Is All Wrong About Overweight and Obesity

DENVER, June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- A new book challenges the conventional wisdom that obesity is a medical condition and claims that it is due to people trying to satisfy their emotional needs with food.

John Thomas, outspoken author of "You Can Live At Any Weight You Choose," says the American Medical Association is all wrong when it calls obesity "a chronic condition for which no cure can reasonably be expected." "It is not a medical condition or medical problem. It is peoples' need to put food in their mouths to taste, chew and savor that is the cause of overweight and obesity," Thomas said, "Erase the emotional need for food and overweight and obesity disappear permanently."

Thomas has developed a process designed to erase the emotional needs that cause cravings for food, overeating, binge eating, eating to relieve tension, frustration or boredom and the use of food as a reward. The process involves understanding, experiencing and eliminating the emotional reactions and feelings that cause people to continue to put food in their mouths that they know will cause them to be overweight or obese. It is easy, safe, painless and permanent.

"Until a person emotionally understands that food is only food, not love or security or happiness, they can never permanently weigh less than they do," according to Thomas, "Only then will they be able to live comfortably at a lower weight."

In his book Thomas makes the case that people will weigh exactly what they are emotionally comfortable weighing, even if that weight is 400 pounds and makes their life a living hell. Thomas also disputes the prevailing belief when he says that if all the fast food restaurants disappeared tomorrow, no one would weigh one pound less. They will simply get the food they emotionally need somewhere else.

He says, "The long term failure rate of over 95% for diets, drugs, herbal remedies, appetite suppressants and exercise programs and the fact that nearly 100% of all dieters fail to keep weight off for two years is eloquent proof that they are a long term waste of time and money for millions of people."

His book is available at bookstores, on-line bookstores and from the author's website, http://www.emotionalchange.com .
