| So now when you see a person who has had surgery to have his or her stomach stapled or bypassed or virtually eliminated and has “lost” weight, you will realize that nothing magic happened. All that happened is the person had to stop putting so much food in his or her mouth. So what does that tell you? If you weigh too much it tells you that you are doing the EXACT SAME THING. You have the exact same problem, just not as severe. You don’t have to put as much food in your mouth as the 300 or 400 pound person did. That’s why you don’t weigh as much as they do. However, that’s why you say that “diets don’t work” for you. That, of course, is nonsense. All legitimate diets “work”. If a diet, any diet, tells you to eat fewer calories than you burn up you will “lose” weight. That isn’t rocket science. The diets aren’t the problem. You just can’t stand to eat the amount of food, or types of foods that the diets prescribe. Why? Because you feel you need to eat certain foods or a certain amount of food. You know you don’t need – or want – the food in your system. So why are you putting the food in your mouth? That’s really stupid, isn’t it? Yet you do it anyway. Why? Because you feel you have to. That’s all eating really is – putting the food in your mouth, and tasting it and chewing it. That’s all there is to it. Oh sure, you can “follow” a diet for a while. But experience has proven that almost certainly you will go back to what is emotionally comfortable for you. You will find that you miss the taste or feel of certain foods in your mouth or that you are not “eating” enough food. If you have to you will forage to get those foods. You will do pretty much anything you have to do to get them. Remember what you were taught about Prohibition? The government tried to take alcoholic drinks away from people. The result was a disaster and it didn’t last long. It’s the same thing with diets, any diets. Statistics prove that almost everyone will sooner or later revert to what they call their “eating habits”. What they really mean is that they are going to do what makes them emotionally comfortable. That’s exactly what everyone does. The trick, if you want to call it that, is to change your emotional comfort zone with respect to weight and food. It’s not that difficult. It’s what we do. |
