| Well, its time to talk about the latest magic pill to “lost weight”, the low carbohydrate diet. You think it’s new, it’s revolutionary and it’s wonderful. You’ve tried it, your friends have tried it and everyone has lost weight, maybe lots of weight. It’s the solution to your problem. You are just thrilled – at least so far. Actually, you may be wrong on a couple of important issues. You may not know that the low carbohydrate diet was publicized in a book published in 1825. Yes, you read it correctly, 1825. This was reported in an excellent article in the New York Times on February 22, 2004. According to the Times the low carbohydrate diet caused quite a sensation. However, it didn’t last long. It apparently returned in another book published in 1863 when a London undertaker lost 50 pounds on a low carbohydrate diet and wrote a book about it extolling its virtues. Apparently that didn’t last either and other diets became more popular. So there you have it. The low carb craze is simply, been there – done that. It’s been around for 180 years. That’s quite a while. You surely must wonder why anyone is overweight, let alone fat. All they had to do is eat low carb food and presto they can be thin. It’s time to ask yourself why a diet that has been around for 180 years didn’t stop the obesity epidemic. Why didn’t people just cut out all the carbs? You don’t think it’s hard to do. Why didn’t the whole world do it? Why is anyone fat? The whole world didn’t do it and never will do it because carbohydrates are not the problem. Low carb diets are not the solution. NO diet is the solution. What people think is the low carb phenomenon will disappear as soon as people find themselves gaining back weight they thought they had lost. Virtually everyone will, sooner or later, regain that weight. In the long run it doesn’t make one iota of difference what types of foods, of the amount of foods, you are trying to force people to eat. No one has been, and no one will be, successful in dictating what foods people should put in their mouths. Even the suggestion is ridiculous. Food is not the problem. The real issue is WHY people are putting all that food in their mouths. That issue is the crux of the weight problem, the obesity epidemic and why millions of people weigh more than they want to weigh. Once again, the only long term solution to this problem is eliminating the emotional reasons that cause you to put all that food in your mouth. |
