SIXTIETH DAILY EXPERIENCE

It’s really fascinating to watch what well meaning people are doing to cure the obesity epidemic that is sweeping the nation, if not the world. Since they don’t know what else to do they are trying to regulate what foods people put in their mouths. Lots of parents are causing schools to eliminate soda pop and other caloric drinks from vending machines in schools and changing the types and kinds of foods that schools serve their students. They do so in the belief that if those drinks and foods aren’t available in schools that the children will lose weight. It’s the out-of-sight-out-of-mind kind of thinking.

Now fast food restaurants are reducing the size of the portions of French fries and meals they serve. They are not only under pressure from public opinion; they have been the target of lawsuits – ridiculous lawsuits, but lawsuits nonetheless. Presumably, other sellers of foods, not just fast foods, will follow suit. Again, this entire effort is based on the “finding” that if people are served bigger portions they will eat more. So the “experts” conclude that if portions are smaller people will put less food in their mouths. This, of course, assumes that people are too stupid to know how to order more food if they want it.

Well, what effect do you think that attempts to tell people what foods, and how much food, they should put in their mouths will have? If you said “none” you are absolutely right. Only time will tell, but remember you heard it here first. This is all a stunning waste of time, effort and money. Fat people already know they are fat. While they were getting fat they knew how to stop it. Once they became fat they knew how to change it. That was never a secret. The problem is that they couldn’t do it. That’s why hundreds of thousands of people are having their stomachs removed or stapled. They just couldn’t stop putting food in their mouths. This is why this is an exercise in futility. Again, people are trying to force you to put less food in your mouth. They are trying to make it more difficult for you to get food. And people think this will have a long term effect. What a ridiculous thought! That’s what happens when you don’t understand the real problem. You end up trying to eliminate the symptoms. I’m waiting for those people to try to rob off the spots when their kids get measles instead of curing the real problem.

Once people see what a long term failure this effort is they may be frustrated enough to look at the real problem. However, the reality is that they don’t understand and don’t know how to deal with the real problem. They will have to learn.
