FIFTY-THIRD DAILY EXPERIENCE

Let’s talk about why you have been unable to “lose weight”. You know you weigh way too much and you have to weigh less. Your weight is bad for your health and is making you very unhappy. It’s bad news for your social life. Everyone tells you you’re fat. Buying clothes is a personal nightmare. You can’t stand how much you weigh. So what do you do? You go on a diet.

Fine. Now you’re on a diet. Big deal. What happens? You are dedicated at first and you are eating exactly what the diet is telling you to eat. You begin to “lose weight”. You are really happy. You are convinced that you are going to permanently lose a lot of weight. You begin to fantasize about buying new clothes – in much smaller sizes. You can see how your social life is going to pick up and you can visualize how popular you are going to be weighing a lot less. It’s thoughts like those that keep you going. You are convinced that you are going to realize your objective. It’s like a dream come true.

So, what happens? You begin to “cheat”. You begin to eat foods that your diet strictly prohibits. You know that those foods are going to make it impossible for you to realize your goal and all the wonderful things that come with it. So why are you “cheating”? Why do you put foods in your mouth that are going to ruin everything for you? Doesn’t it sound crazy? You are sabotaging yourself. It’s self – inflicted damage.

Now, this is the time to deal with your real problem. Before you put any foods in your mouth you must ask yourself why you are “cheating”. Why are you intentionally stopping yourself from making yourself happy? It’s just too crazy. You are not that stupid. You cannot avoid that question. If you want to deal with your real problem you must answer that question. If you aren’t sure how to answer it, here’s what you must do. Every time you feel like “cheating” do NOT eat the food you feel you must have. See how you react. How do you feel? Are you getting frustrated? Do you feel deprived? Are you getting anxious? What is going to happen to you if you don’t put that food in your mouth? Are you getting panicky?

Once you start answering those questions truthfully you will find that you feel an emotional need to put those foods in your mouth. You cannot possibly justify what you are doing on rational grounds. You will find that you have a negative emotional reaction when you don’t put those foods in your mouth. Emotionally, it is more important to you to put those foods in your mouth and remain fat then it is to not eat the foods and get slim.

Yes, that’s the problem. That’s why you got fat and why you will remain fat. Unless, of course, you are willing to eliminate your emotional need for food. Once you do that, weighing what you want to weigh is the simplest thing in the world.
