| You have “lost” weight before. It’s been a fight, but you’ve done it. The rub is that no matter how much weight you “lose” you have gained it back. Let’s figure out why you did that. Let’s re-enact why you gained all that weight you it took you forever to “lose.” Here you were, 15 or 20 pounds lighter and pretty pleased with yourself and happy about what you did. You wanted to remain at that weight. The one thing you never wanted to do was regain that weight. So, why did you put all that food in your mouth? What were you thinking? You knew while you were putting all that food in your mouth that you were – for sure – going to gain back the weight. Let’s analyze why you did it? Think back to when you had “lost” all that weight. Why did you start putting all that food in your mouth? Did you think you were entitled to a “reward” for being “good”? Was all that food something you just had to have? What did the food do for you? Did it cause you to have positive emotional reactions like feeling good, or feeling happy or contented? Did you feel deprived after you “lost” all that weight? These are important questions that you really have to answer for yourself. You can lie to yourself but, of course, there really isn’t any point to that. Only you are going to know the answers. Come on now, tell yourself why you had to eat enough food to get back to the weight you say you hated and couldn’t stand. Tell yourself why you did the one thing that you hated almost more than anything else; to weigh 20 or 30 pounds too much and be fat again. Intellectually, you knew what you were doing was self-destructive but you did it anyway. Well now, that really says wonderful things about you. You sabotaged yourself. Congratulations. What a great thing to do. You made yourself really unhappy. Aren’t you thrilled? How could you possibly do such an incredibly stupid thing? You’re smart. You have lots of responsibilities and you handle them all without a problem. But, when it comes to the one thing in the world you really, really want – to be thin- you stop yourself from getting it. Surely, you understand that your problem is not intellectual and it is something no diet in the world will change. You are not emotionally comfortable weighing what you swear you want to weigh. Face it. That’s the fact of the matter. You aren’t going to get where you want to be unless you stop eating for emotional reasons. You have to get rid of your need to keep putting food in your mouth. That’s really the key and that’s why you cannot control your weight. |
