Daily Experience #35

THRITY-FIFTH DAILY EXPERIENCE

You’re so used to eating the way you do, you can’t understand how there could be any other way of eating or dealing with food. You just automatically put food in your mouth, pretty much every chance you get. If your supermarket or coffee shop offers free samples of food, whether it’s coffee cake or some new product they are introducing, you just take what is on the plate and put it in your mouth. There’s no real thought behind it. It’s almost an involuntary reaction. You know, why should you pass up free food. But then again, you weigh 30 pounds too much and you are desperate to weigh 30 pounds less, but you still take whatever food someone offers you even though it will keep you weighing 30 pounds too much. That’s because you still are eating for emotional reasons.

Let me tell you what’s it’s like when you have eliminated your emotional need for food. Once you do that, you don’t instinctively put food in your mouth. That’s an emotional reaction. That’s over. Now you make intellectual choices about whether to put food in your mouth. E.g. eat food. You instinctively say to yourself, “Will putting this food in my mouth make me happy or unhappy?” If you still weigh more than you want to weigh, you don’t want to put that food in your mouth because it will make you unhappy. It will cause you to continue to weigh too much. Therefore, you will not even think twice about putting that food in your mouth. Why would you do something that will cause you to be unhappy? Since you have no emotional need to put the food in your mouth, you will not feel the least bit troubled or deprived by not putting the food in your mouth. You won’t miss it. You have made an intellectual choice. You have decided not to eat the food because it would make you unhappy to do so. That is how you will decide what, and how much, to eat from then on. Your decisions will be based on what will make you happy, not on whether you feel an emotional need to put food in your mouth.

Yes, it really is that simple. That is all there is to it. No diets, no deprivation, no worrying about weight. Once you eliminate the emotional component of eating (putting food in your mouth), weighing what you want to weigh becomes a very simple matter. You will never feel deprived again if you don’t get food in your mouth. You have trouble believing this? Just look at why you are putting so much food in your mouth. You know exactly what to do to weigh what you want to weigh. So does everybody else. You just can’t do it. Neither can anyone else. When you eliminate eating for emotional reasons you will be able to. Weight will no longer be a problem for you. You will be able to weigh what you want to weigh.
