Daily Experience #28

TWENTY-EIGHTH DAILY EXPERIENCE

O.K. You weigh 30 pounds more than you used to. You can’t stand weighing that much. It’s really depressing. You don’t like how you look or how you feel. Your weight is affecting your life in a really negative way. You know it’s not healthy for you to weigh what you do. So why did you let it happen?

You know, weighing what you do didn’t happen by accident. It didn’t happen because you got lazy. It didn’t happen because you wanted it to. So, how did you come to weigh this much? This is the first question you should be asking yourself. Everybody you know wants to know how to weigh less. That’s the wrong question. You are never going to weigh less until you appreciate why you weigh 30 pounds too much.

You gained all that weight because you had to. No, it wasn’t something you planned for yourself. You didn’t sit down and say that you wanted to weigh 30 pounds too much. But you intentionally put enough food in your mouth to cause you to gain all that weight. You knew exactly what you were doing. You knew you were eating an amount of food, and the kinds of food, that would cause you to gain a great deal of weight. You didn’t want to weigh what you do. So, why did you eat all that food?

You should reflect back on the periods in your life when you gained weight. You will find that there were situations, and emotional circumstances, that you felt you could only deal with by eating, e.g. putting food in your mouth. Sure the food tasted good. But you weren’t foolish enough to trade a good taste, which lasted for only the very short period of time that the food was in your mouth, for a lifetime of being overweight. You’re smarter than that. However, you should spend some time reflecting on when you gained weight and why you gained weight. You will find that you had emotional needs that you tried to satisfy with food. If you didn’t you wouldn’t have put all that food in your mouth knowing it was going to make you really unhappy. Maybe it was your family life, or your job, or difficult times that you were going through or even the problems you encountered in your daily life. Of course, only you know what caused you to put the food in your mouth, but you will see that you can pretty much isolate the times and reasons you ate the way you did. You will then know why you weigh 30 pounds too much. It will know longer be a mystery. You will realize that your “weight problem” is not only self – inflicted, but also not really a “weight problem” at all. It is the result of your attempts to satisfy your emotional needs with food. Don’t worry. You can change all that.
