Daily Experience #21

TWENTY-FIRST DAILY EXPERIENCE

Do you really know why you eat the way you do? You probably think you only eat when you are “hungry.” You probably think you eat for rational reasons. You probably think you “need” all the food you eat. Of course, you must be joking. You weigh 30 pounds more than you think you should and you are eating just enough food to keep you at that weight. Why are you doing that?

You really have to understand what it is you’re doing. Why don’t you find out? Here’s what we’ll do. You’re going to keep track of what you’re eating. But you’ve probably already done that and you have learned nothing from it. So we’re going to done one better. Anytime you want to put any food in your mouth you are going to stop and ask yourself why you are putting that food in your mouth. The answer to that question is really important. Each time, ask yourself whether you are really “hungry” and you need that food for nutrition. If you don’t need that food for nutrition and you weigh 30 pounds too much, why are you even thinking of putting the food in your mouth? Why would you do it? It’s kind of suicidal because you weigh so much and rationally you don’t want to commit suicide so why are you seriously thinking of eating that food?

What is compelling you to even consider putting the food in your mouth? Here you say you weigh too much and now you want to do the one thing that will keep you weighing too much. Try saying it out loud. Tell yourself you weigh 30 pounds too much and you want to eat enough food to keep you weighing 30 pounds too much. Doesn’t it sound crazy when you say it out loud? Of course it’s crazy – on a logical basis. On an emotional basis you find it necessary that you put that food in your mouth. If you ask yourself these questions every time you are thinking about putting food in your mouth you will begin to understand why you are doing it, and why you weigh what you do.
