NINETEENTH DAILY EXPERIENCE

Today, you’re going to isolate the feelings that cause you to eat, e.g. put food in your mouth, more than you should. You know the whole problem is that you eat too much food. It is really that simple. But, of course, you already know this. It’s not a big secret. So, why don’t you just eat less? You know that by eating the amount of food that you do you are causing yourself to weigh too much. That makes you very unhappy and increases all sorts of health risks. So why are you so self-destructive? Why are you hurting yourself? Why not just run headlong into a wall or crash your car. Chances are that you would do less damage to yourself than by eating the way you do.

So you have to focus on exactly why you are hurting yourself. No, don’t even think of saying that it’s because you “love” food. That’s silly and you know it. You don’t love it. You just can’t do without it. You find yourself putting more food in your mouth than you know you should, but you can’t stop it. Keep in mind that it’s not the food. It’s you. Every time you even think about putting food in your mouth, you have to ask yourself why do you want to do that. Please don’t say that you’re “hungry”. If you weigh 30 pounds more than you should you’re eating for reasons other than “hunger”. Be sure and tell yourself over and over that you will hurt yourself if you put the food in your mouth. If you still feel a “need” to put the food in your mouth, ask yourself why you feel that “need.” You also have to ask yourself what will happen to you if you don’t put the food in your mouth. Will you start getting anxious? Will you feel uncomfortable? What is driving you to eat an amount of food that is going to cause you grief? Why are you doing this to yourself? This has nothing to do with “losing weight.” You first have to understand why you gained the weight you did. Don’t forget, you didn’t gain all that weight by accident. You did it intentionally. That’s right. You did it intentionally. It may not have been intentional in the intellectual or logical sense, but you knew exactly what you were doing. You knew what the consequences would be and you did it anyway.

The fact of the matter is that you had no real control over the amount of food you ate. You ate what you did for emotional reasons. You had emotional needs that you tried to satisfy with food. That’s why you weigh what you do and why you can’t “lose weight.” However, you are going to weigh what you want to weigh by eliminating those needs.
